FAFSA- The Key to Obtaining Student Aid

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  If you or a child of yours has been looking into applying for post-high school career training and have been searching for sources of financial aid, you know that filing a FAFSA form is an important requirement.  With the information you provide to your chosen school, a determination will be made regarding your EFC, or Expected Family Contribution.  It should be understood by all families and their students that almost every student qualifies for some sort of financial aid, be it a low interest federal Stafford loan or a parent PLUS loan, for example.

To file a FAFSA, the student must meet certain requirements.  These include:

- Being a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or a noncitizen eligible to file
- Have a valid U.S. Social Security number
- Have a high school diploma or valid GED
- You must not be in a state of default on any student loans
- You must not owe any refunds on any federal student grants
- If you are a male age 18-25, you must be registered with the U.S. Selective Service
- When submitting your FAFSA, you must promise to use the funds offered for educational purposes
- You must not have been found guilty of the sale or possession of illegal drugs during any period in which you received federal aid.

There are many resources available that give information about student aid.  There are so many, in fact, that understanding the processes and requirements can be overwhelming.  Here are a couple of free resources that can help you find appropriate schools and sources of financial aid.  Just fill in the short form and you will receive information about appropriate schools and financial assistance.  Note that most schools, colleges and universities use FAFSA information for financial assistance that is not federally based, such as state or college level scholarships and assistance.

Be Mindful of The Dates Your FAFSA and Application are Due

Each school has its own requirements regarding when they need to receive your FAFSA and other application paperwork.  Check with the financial aid office of the schools you wish to apply to so as to understand their requirements.
